How Taxes Work When You Live in New Jersey & Work in New York
If you live in Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark, Montclair, or anywhere across New Jersey, but your employer is based in Manhattan or New York State, you are part of one of the busiest commuter corridors in America. According to guidance from the State of New Jersey Division of Taxation ↗ and the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance ↗, here is how your pay stub taxes are structured:
1. You Pay NY State Income Tax First Because your wages are physically earned in New York, your employer will withhold New York State income tax based on NY Form IT-2104. You will file a NY Non-Resident return (Form IT-203) using standard New York State Tax Brackets.
2. You Do NOT Pay NYC Personal Income Tax Even if your office is in Midtown Manhattan or Wall Street, NYC local personal income tax (3.078% - 3.876%) is strictly reserved for NYC residents. Compare details on our NYC Tax Calculator. NJ commuters are completely exempt.
3. New Jersey Grants You a Tax Credit You will also file a NJ Resident return (Form NJ-1040). On Schedule NJ-COJ, New Jersey gives you a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for taxes paid to New York, eliminating double taxation!
